Pride Month, Pleasure, and Feeling at Home in Your Own Skin
Pride Month, Pleasure, and Feeling at Home in Your Own Skin
June has a way of arriving with color. Rainbow flags show up in windows, parade plans start floating through group chats, outfits get a little louder, playlists get better, and suddenly everyone seems to remember that joy can be a form of confidence.
But Pride Month is more than a rainbow moment. It is history, community, visibility, remembrance, celebration, and, for many people, a yearly reminder of something deeply personal: everyone deserves to feel comfortable being themselves.
At Nice & Naughty, that matters to us. Not in a flashy, “look at us” kind of way, but in the everyday way. The way someone walks into a store with a question they have been too shy to ask. The way a couple wants to explore something new without feeling awkward. The way a person wants to shop for intimacy, wellness, lingerie, gifts, or confidence-building products in a space that feels welcoming instead of intimidating.
That is the heart of Pride for us: comfort, curiosity, confidence, and respect.
A quick look back: why Pride is celebrated in June
Pride Month has roots in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and June is significant because of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City in June 1969. One year later, on June 28, 1970, the first Pride march was held in New York City to mark the anniversary of Stonewall. The Library of Congress notes that this first march was known as Christopher Street Liberation Day and helped establish the annual Pride traditions we recognize today.
What started as a march for visibility and equal rights has grown into something many communities recognize in different ways: parades, festivals, educational events, family gatherings, art, music, local business support, and yes, plenty of outfits that deserve their own standing ovation.
Here in Michigan, Pride is not just a national idea. It is local. Motor City Pride describes itself as Michigan’s largest Pride celebration, with more than 65,000 participants, and its mission centers on fostering Pride and respect for the LGBTQ community.
Pride is history, but it is also everyday life
One reason Pride still matters is because LGBTQ+ people are not a niche audience or a once-a-year conversation. They are friends, partners, parents, coworkers, neighbors, customers, business owners, artists, caregivers, and community members.
That last statistic is the one we think about in retail.
Because nobody should have to brace themselves before walking into a store. Nobody should have to rehearse a question in the car. Nobody should feel like they need to explain who they are before they are treated with basic kindness.
What adult wellness has to do with Pride
Let’s be honest: shopping for adult products can already feel personal.
Even confident people can feel a little shy the first time they walk into an adult wellness store. Add identity, orientation, gender expression, body confidence, relationship style, or past uncomfortable shopping experiences into the mix, and it becomes even more important for the space to feel respectful.
That is where Pride and adult wellness naturally connect.
Pride says: you deserve to be seen. Adult wellness says: you deserve to feel comfortable in your own body, your own relationships, and your own curiosity.
Nice & Naughty sits right in that overlap. We believe shopping for intimacy should feel less like a dare and more like a guided, comfortable retail experience. You should be able to browse at your own pace, ask a real question, laugh a little, learn something useful, and leave feeling more confident than when you walked in.
No judgment. No awkward pressure. No assumptions.
Just a welcoming space for adults who are exploring what feels good, what feels fun, what feels romantic, what feels affirming, or what simply makes them smile.
Pride is not one look, one label, or one love story
One of the most beautiful things about Pride is that it refuses to be one-size-fits-all.
For some people, Pride is loud music, glitter, dancing, and a group photo that takes 14 attempts because someone always blinks.
For others, Pride is quieter. It is holding hands in public for the first time. It is finding language that fits. It is being accepted by someone who matters. It is creating a home that feels safe. It is choosing softness after years of feeling guarded.
And for some, Pride is simply permission to enjoy life without shrinking.
That is why inclusive adult wellness matters. Pleasure, comfort, confidence, and connection do not belong to only one kind of person or one kind of couple. They belong to adults of many identities, orientations, bodies, experiences, and comfort levels.
How to celebrate Pride in a way that feels like you
There is no official personality test for Pride Month. You do not have to attend every event, wear every color, or know every lyric to every pop anthem, although that last one does help.
- Support LGBTQ-owned businesses and local community events.
- Learn more about LGBTQ+ history and the people who helped shape it.
- Check in on people you love and make space for honest conversations.
- Create a home, relationship, or routine that feels more affirming.
- Embrace joy, curiosity, and self-expression in a way that feels comfortable to you.
You can also celebrate by embracing joy.
Buy the outfit. Light the candle. Plan the date night. Refresh the lingerie drawer. Explore something new. Ask the question. Let yourself be curious. Let yourself feel good.
Pride began with visibility and resistance, but it has always made room for celebration too. Joy is not shallow. For many people, joy is healing. Joy is connection. Joy is confidence finally taking up space.
